People often ask us, “Will I burn more calories if I eat six small meals instead of three big meals a day?

The notion behind it is simple: stretch out your daily calories over six meals and it will stimulate your metabolism and burn more calories… There’s only one small problem, it’s wrong.

The science is pretty straight forward, as long as total caloric and nutrient intake stays the same, then metabolism, at the end of the day, should stay the same as well.

Here’s a snippet from a great article in the New York Times: “One study that carefully demonstrated this, published in 2009 in The British Journal of Nutrition, involved groups of overweight men and women who were randomly assigned to very strict low-calorie diets and followed for eight weeks. Each subject consumed the same number of calories per day, but one group took in three meals a day and the other six.”

It goes on to state that while both groups lost significant amounts of weight, neither lost more than the other. “There was no difference between them in fat loss, appetite control or measurements of hormones that signal hunger and satiety.” the article states.

Regardless of what you might see on TV or read on the internet, other studies have had similar results.

The truth (and the science) are clear: if you want to lose weight, go with proper nutrition and exercise.
